In defence of 4x4 drivers, I give the knockers the ten best reasons why I drive one:

1. I tow a large caravan and need the large space in the car for other leisure items.

2. I have a large dog which rides at the back of the car in his box avoiding the dangerous practise of having an animal in the back or front seat.

3. I can accommodate six passengers, which I sometimes have to.

4. It has been proved you have more chance of survival in a 4x4 than others in the event of a crash.

5. I can see the situation ahead of me clearly when driving which makes it easier to anticipate my movements and makes me a safer driver.

6. I can park in car parks within the marked lines (I'm smaller than a Volvo estate).

7. Being a person of latter years and being blessed with a dodgy back, I find it easier to get in and out of my car and the bench-type seats are far more comfortable.

8. Having a larger car, I drive more slowly, unlike some in smaller ones who belt around.

9. I get reasonable petrol consumption, bearing in mind the advantages of a 4x4, approx 28 mpg and 34 when using cruise control.

10. Lastly, I chose a 4x4 because, living in the UK I have freedom of choice and don't need to be told by uninformed people what I should or should not do or drive, if within the law.

In these days of road rage, is MP Norman Baker trying to create more of it between 4x4 drivers and others?

He should put his efforts into tackling real crimes and injustices on our roads rather than boosting his ego by attacking such a soft and undeserved target.
