Excited children met firefighters and had their faces beautifully painted as part of an East Sussex village school's summer fete.

Several hundred people turned out on Saturday afternoon for hours of fun at Barcombe Primary School.

Attractions included sponge throwing, a bouncy castle, and stalls selling home-made produce.

Some of the stalls were staffed by the youngsters themselves at the 127-pupil school in School Path, Barcombe, near Lewes.

Retained firefighters from Barcombe put in an appearance with a fire engine and they allowed youngsters to put on their helmets and gold-coloured jackets.

Just under £1,000 was raised from the event, with proceeds going towards helping the Parent Teacher Association refurbish the playground.

Senior teacher Helen Chiasson said: "It was a wonderful afternoon with a lot of smiling faces all round.

"Fortunately the rain held off to give us wonderful sunshine. And it was great so much hard work and effort paid off so well."
