A grandfather has vowed to continue his fight over plans to erect a mobile phone mast in Crawley.

John Milsom, 69, of Burlands, has successfully appealed three times in the past three years against relay masts near his home.

The campaigning pensioner has already taken on phone firms Vodaphone and Orange.

This time BT- operating as the 02 network - has been given the go-ahead by Crawley Borough Council's ruling executive.

The idea is to place a phone mast on top of floodlights at Crawley Rugby Club's ground at Langley Green.

The matter is due to come before the full council on June 26 and Mr Milsom, whose home backs on to the ground, is preparing to make his stand.

He said: "It is a simple issue - they should not allow masts anywhere near the public. I have fought this successfully three times and I am fighting again - for my grandchildren and all the other children in this area.

"No one knows how dangerous these masts are and we should not take any chances."

John is being supported by Northgate Liberal Democrat councillor Linda Seekings.

She said: "These masts should not be near the public. They are pretty ugly at the best of times and there are genuine fears about health matters."

Mrs Seekings has also voiced concern about cash payments by the phone companies.

The council can expect to receive £6,500 each time a mast is erected.

A council spokesman said the authority would only comment after the meeting.
