A rush-hour train service to London is to be put on hold for a multi-million pound railway workshop refit.

The 5.07pm Victoria to Brighton South Central service is one of eight which will be cancelled from Monday until June 20 while depots on the line are revamped.

Managers yesterday warned shorter trains would be used, causing further over-crowding, and there would be further cancellations announced in coming weeks.

The services are being slimmed down to allow a £115 million refurbishment programme at six depots: Brighton, Eastbourne, Littlehampton, Bognor, Selhurst and Streatham Hill.

The old Lovers Walk workshop in Brighton will only be able to service half the usual number of trains while a section is built to house the new fleet of Electrostar trains.

Morning trains to be suspended are: 6.43am Littlehampton-London Bridge via Hove; 7.17am Eastbourne-London Bridge; 7.19am Horsham-Victoria via Redhill; 7.39am East Grinstead-London Bridge.

Suspended evening trains are 5.07pm Victoria-Brighton, 5.30pm London Bridge-East Grinstead; 5.47pm Victoria to Littlehampton via Hove, and 5.56pm London Bridge-Dorking.
