Sean Yates had to spend eight days in hospital after a heart scare.

Yates, from Forest Row, who manages the CSC professional team, said: "I had a bit of a cold and suddenly felt quite ill.

"I was rushed to hospital with a cardiac arrythmia. They had to shock my heart back into its natural rhythm and give me blood-thinning drugs.

"I feel much better now and I will be managing the CSC riders next week in the Dauphine Libere race in France.

"However, I cannot drive the team car until I get the all-clear so I will be in the passenger seat.

"I'm hoping to resume racing later in the year but only after I've had some more tests done in Italy."

Yates, 43, is a former Tour De France yellow jersey winner.

Sussex riders took the honours in the South-Eastern RC 25-mile time trial at Broadbridge Heath. Friston's James Dear (In Gear) won the event in 53min.37sec ahead of Swindon star Steve Marchant (54min10sec). Brighton rider Mike Coyle (VC Etoile) was third in 54min.44sec and Etoile won the team event with Clive Oxborrow clocking 56min. 23sec and Carl Whittaker 58min. 2sec.

Lisa Griffiths (Eastbourne Rovers) won the women's event in 1hr.1min.50sec with Nikki Treacy (GS Stella) second in 1hr.3min 55sec.

Toby Leyton had an outstanding ride in the hour-long circuit race at Hove Park.

The Brighton Mitre rider led from start to finish and lapped the field in the closing stages.

After Leyton crossed the line, the rest had to continue for a further lap to contest the sprint for second place. This went to Mark Winton (Lewes Wanderers) ahead of Mitre riders Stuart Fahey and Gary Smith, with Brighton's Jonathan Sharpe (Boreas) fifth.

Southwater rider Keith Reed (34th Nomads) won the Southern Counties ten-mile event in 21min.34sec despite losing a minute when his chain came off.

Storrington's Mark Jones (GS Stella) took two of the three stages in the Ken Smith Memorial two-day race in the Midlands, won by Colorado champion August De Castro.

But because he was tenth on stage two, Jones finished seventh overall.

The Sussex CA's 50-mile open time trial on Sunday incorporates the county championship. The HQ is Dial Post village hall and the first of 92 riders starts at 6.20am.
