Sheila King of Hastings impressed the Sussex selectors and fans with a sparkling end-of-season performance.

King battled through to the semi-finals of the main singles event before losing to eventual winner Jan Dunning (Worcester) 11-9, 11-6, 10-12, 11-6 at the veterans' National Masters at Thornbury, near Bristol.

Earlier, King capsized England No.6 Helen Shields from Yorkshire for her best win of the season.

Peter Bartram (Worthing) reached the quarter-finals before losing to David Harvey from Gloucester.

Bartram and King then combined to reach the semi-finals of the mixed doubles before losing to eventual winners Joe Kennedy and Elaine Short.

Some Sussex leagues are unhappy with the increase in the annual county subscriptions to £4.50 for next season.

The county suffered a loss of around £900 last season due mainly to the expenses incurred by the junior first team travelling long distances after being promoted to the premier division.

There is also a feeling that the county should not run four veterans' teams.
