It's the women that wear the trousers at Gatwick.

Female workers at Stansted in Essex have given a warning they might get shirty if they have to wear skirts on cold mornings.

The GMB union, which represents thousands of airport ground staff, have taken up the complaint.

A 150-signature petition says that the workers will take action if they are not given the choice to wear uniform skirts or trousers.

But at Gatwick the petition is not putting the wind up the management.

A BAA spokesman said that uniform issues were purely for individual airlines and handlers to decide on.

At Aviance, spokesman Chris Hudson said: "Our female staff can wear trousers or skirts as applicable to the weather. It is a dual uniform issue and we have no problems with it."

A British Airways spokesman also confirmed that trousers and skirts were part of the new uniforms being issued and that staff wear either when they are on duty at the airport.

GMB organiser Gary Pearce said: "Meeting a plane on a cold morning in a skirt can be a very unpleasant job."
