At a time of frenzy of local election campaigning and spin on our doorsteps, I had the privilege of attending a community volunteer conference and was staggered to hear and meet some of the massive army of volunteers who make Brighton and Hove a far better place in which to live.

What recognition do they get? Very little, I presume.

I had certainly never heard of many of the projects. Let me give you one example, a project called Anti-freeze that works among homeless people.

This project has run for more than ten years in the city.

Over this past winter period, we were told every week night was covered by volunteers going out on the street, providing essential supplies to keep people alive.

Why do we not get to hear so much more about these types of groups and people? That's where council money needs to go.

As a Brighton and Hove resident, my hat goes off the such people.
