Paris the donkey is making a new home in Sussex after she literally fell off the back of a lorry.

She is one of four donkeys who are looking forward to new lives in the county after they were rescued from Greece.

They arrived at the Brownbread Horse Rescue Centre in Ashburnham, Battle, following a complicated rescue mission organised over several months.

Aided by several UK charities, Samson, Paris, Marika and Rafina were transported to England by lorry, along with five other donkeys, seven Shetland ponies and 12 dogs.

The donkeys suffered appalling neglect until rescuers helped them escape from their squalid conditions.

Samson, Marika and Rafina were found abandoned at different locations, with Samson having massively-overgrown hooves.

Paris, meanwhile, was one of three donkeys picked up by Greek police after falling from the back of a lorry.

With the other animals enjoying comfortable homes elsewhere in England, the four donkeys are flourishing at the rescue centre, whose trustees include actress Dora Bryan.

The animals' plight was initially raised by Mike Thompson, of the Greek Animal Rescue, after he saw them emaciated with large swathes of bare skin.

The rescue operation was mounted, which included the Caring for the Animals Trust, and within months the animals were safely transported to England.

Tony Smith, chairman of trustees of Brownbread Horse Rescue Centre, said: "They are doing really well now but at the time they were in a terrible state.

"They were terribly thin through being starved and with large patches of bare skin across their bodies."
