Peter Garrett (Letters, April 16) remarks that Falmer has attracted more controversy than "other stadium sites".

This is hardly surprising as Falmer is the only one going through the planning process.

If an application was made to build a stadium on open downland north of the bypass - as Falmer protesters have often suggested - any controversy over Falmer would look like a murmured discussion in a public library.

Mr Garrett's agenda is that the Albion should stay at Withdean for the forseeable future and then move to Shoreham Harbour. To this end, he has previously claimed (Letters, April 4) the present ground is viable.

His claim is palpably untrue: The constraints of Withdean mean the Albion's profit from matches held there is little more than a fifth of the Division One average.

The club cannot survive for long in its temporary home and certainly not for the 20 years it would take for Shoreham Harbour to become available.

In addition, there is the small matter of the £50 million needed to provide the harbour with the road access Falmer already has.

Protesters really must stop plucking alleged alternative sites from out of thin air.
