Keith Miles is confident Rye and Iden United can emerge as champions of Matthew Clark County League division two.

The East Sussex side have the destiny of the title in their own hands but they will have to win it the hard way.

To be sure of overhauling Eastbourne Town, Rye need five wins from their remaining six games, all of which are away from home, but player-boss Miles believes they are up to the challenge.

Miles said: "If you look at our results over the season, we haven't lost too many away from home.

"When we are away from home we look more solid. Even though our last six games are all away there is no reason why we can't do it."

Rye are currently seven points behind leaders Eastbourne Town, who have played four more games. This follows a 2-0 win against one-time promotion contenders Lancing on Saturday.

Steve Willard opened the scoring for Rye in the first half with a screaming half-volley from 25 yards and substitute Dave Williams made sure on the points with a goal five minutes after coming on. The home side also hit the woodwork four times in the second half.

Worthing United were dealt a blow before a ball was kicked against Saltdean United.

Manager John Dutton resigned on the morning of the game which meant assistant-boss Peter Redman was suddenly handed the reins.

The match finished 2-2 with Mike McCaffrey scoring a late equaliser for Worthing. Lee Walls had earlier put them ahead from the penalty spot but Saltdean turned the game around thanks to Dan Razavi's first goal for a year and Adam Burton's 20th of the season.

Dutton, who took over last October, said: "A lot of it is to do with personal things. I am moving house, we have just had a baby and there is a lot to sort out.

"But there are too many things going on at the club that I wasn't happy about and I didn't think I got full backing. I decided enough was enough for this season. I will look for a management position for next season."

Redman has been placed in caretaker charge for the rest of the season.

Oving have given themselves a glimmer of hope of avoiding the drop. Only one team will be relegated following the merger between Eastbourne United and Shinewater which means the team finishing second from bottom will be reprieved.

A second successive win for Oving, this time a 3-1 defeat of Shinewater, leaves them with a mathematical chance of catching Pease Pottage.

Goals from Paul Smith (two) and Neil Barratt ensured victory, with Jason Morley replying from the penalty spot.

Assistant-boss Andy Millard said: "There is no reason why we couldn't win all our games left. The confidence is there, we are really buzzing."

Pease Pottage held on for a 0-0 draw at home to Steyning Town despite having Terry Thornback sent off for violent conduct after 13 minutes.

Thornback elbowed Steying's Martin Rowe, conceding a penalty in the process but the spot-kick was wasted when manager John Bolingbroke called goalkeeper Andy Ewen forward to take it and he blasted well wide.

For Steyning, Gareth Dutton and Rowe both had efforts disallowed in the second half.

Another penalty miss came in the 1-1 draw between Westfield and Crawley Down.

Dominic Clarke's 16th minute goal appeared to have sent Westfield on their way to victory.

Two minutes from time, the visitors were awarded a penalty only for goalkeeper Paul Worthington to produce an excellent save to deny Adam Aylward.

But the reprieve was short lived as Aylward set up Darren Tidey for a stoppage time equaliser.
