Worthing have completed a fabulous title double. Now the hard work really starts.

That is the message from coach Ian Davies after his men beat Beckenham 28-5 to claim the London Two South crown.

It was Worthing's second title in 12 months, during which time they have also won the Sussex Trophy and gone on a decent Powergen Cup run.

Long-serving duo Terry Butler and Steve Dove both scored tries on a day of celebration for a large crowd at Roundstone Lane.

Worthing looked title outsiders a few weeks ago but have played their best rugby of the season to win four successive games while leaders Gosport stumbled.

Davies said: "It is a fabulous achievement to win another title. We had our good run at just the right time.

"After the match there wasn't the same elation as last year.

"I think there was a realisation that next season will be a lot of hard work.

"We have basically got the club back to where it should be and we have done it without signing players."

Davies had admitted his side were nervous going into the game but a well crafted seventh-minute try from Ben Coulson worked wonders in easing the butterflies.

Dove powered over from a driving lineout with second-half scores from Butler and Raynn Bruce rounding things off.

Coulson kicked a conversion and two penalties.

Worthing could face a Sussex derby with Haywards Heath next season.

Heath rounded off their London One campaign with an excellent 33-18 win at Thanet Wanderers but missed out on the title on points difference.

Southend, who have been unstoppable since their one-point defeat by Heath in January, clinched the title with a 60-12 win at Norwich.

Heath host South West One runners-up Reading in a promotion play-off a week on Saturday, arguably the biggest club match Sussex has ever seen.

Tries by Giles Goodburn, Stuart Charnley, Nick Killick and Henry Goodburn gave Heath their win with Owen Ashton kicking the rest of the points.

Victory was marred by a broken ankle for lock Dave Atkin, playing his first game after a troublesome shoulder injury.

Heath skipper Alex Meredith said: "He was playing really well. He will be out now for a minimum of six months, which will be a big loss."

Atkin's injury is also bad news for Sussex, who kick-off their County Championship warm-up with a trip to Combined London Old Boys tomorrow.
