Brian Hitchen used the old road lobby comment, "If you want to make the flow of blood easier, widen the arteries" (The Argus, April 7).

Transport minister Alistair Darling seems to agree by pouring down the drain billions of pounds on covering the countryside with Tarmac, tunnels and flyovers yet traffic continues to outstrip road space.

Do the 60 per cent owning road vehicles want local authorities to start compulsorily purchasing for urban road widening?
