Sarah Scott is a 14-year-old schoolgirl who differs from most of her friends by being the mother of a baby boy.

She was only 13 when she had sex with a boy of much the same age and she does not know who he is.

Sarah is fond of Joshua and gives him plenty of care. Her mother, Elizabeth, often looks after both child and grandchild.

Sarah is still able to study at Falmer High School in Brighton and hopes to complete her education successfully.

In the end, life may work out fine for Sarah, her son Joshua and her mother.

Despite this, they are keen to caution other teenage girls about falling into the same trap.

Things are not always easy for Sarah and her family who are coping well. In many other cases, teenage pregnancy is a disaster.

Plenty of teenage parents simply cannot cope. In many cases the children are adopted as Joshua would have been had Sarah not formed a bond as soon as she laid eyes on him.

In almost all cases, teenage mothers are a financial burden on society because they cannot work and usually receive no support from the fathers.

We wish Sarah well in making a success of her life. But other young teenagers should take the advice she gives of being careful and taking precautions.

They may not be as lucky or determined as she is, or have such a supportive mother close at hand.
