I have spent many a pleasant holiday in France embarrassed occasionally only by my limited understanding of the language.

Soon I am going again but, this time, I shall feel embarrassed by the fact I am British. I have never thought I should feel so constrained.

It could be worse, however - I could be holidaying in a Muslim country. This has set me thinking.

I would rather not be a representative of a country which is feared by others because ordinary experience has taught me that those whom we fear we also hate - if only in secret - and I certainly do not wish to be hated by others.

Perhaps it is just being squeamish. Yet when I think around it, consensus and cooperation seem a sounder basis for the united, contented society so many seek than conflict, division and bitterness.
