Oakwood stepped up their late push for promotion from County League division two with a thumping 4-0 win against Worthing United.

The victory left them six points adrift of East Grinstead in the third promotion spot but with two games in hand.

Significantly, Oakwood entertain title chasing Rye and Iden United tonight while Grinstead visit Rye on Saturday.

Second half goals from Gerald Manville, Martin Comper and two by Zak Newman saw Oakwood to victory against an out-of-sorts Worthing side.

Manager Andy Maddox, though, is still playing down his side's chances.

Maddox said: "We have had quite a good run. We have asked the boys to keep at it and see what happens.

"I thought promotion would be a tall order but we have had a few good results and we might now take it to the last couple of games."

East Grinstead boss Bobby Smith said: "It can go either way. We have got the points but Oakwood have the games in hand.

"Before Saturday I would have said we had the harder run-in but perhaps the pendulum may have swung the other way.

"We have both got to play Rye and Oakwood have a couple of hard games against Wealden and Steyning. It might even go to goal difference."

Grinstead have three games left against Rye on Saturday and Westfield at home next Tuesday before finishing away to Crawley Down.

As well as Rye, Wealden and Steyning, Oakwood have games against relegated Oving and Shinewater.

Meanwhile, Wasps picked up a point on Saturday as they held leaders Eastbourne Town to a goalless draw at East Court.

Both teams hit the bar in the second half, 17-year-old leftback Adam Dart with a free kick for Grinstead and Gary Brockwell for Town.

Brockwell was also involved in a late penalty incident when he appeared to be brought down by Grant Hearn but referee Bob Minty ignored the protests of the visitors and booked Brockwell for diving.

Incensed Town boss Dave Winterton said: "Gary has never dived in his life.

"A draw was a fair result on the balance of the game. They had a lot of the first half but we controlled the second half."

Rye closed the gap on Eastbourne Town to 13 points with seven games in hand after beating Oving 1-0 with an early goal from Shaun Loft.

The result relegated Oving, who have been bottom of the table all season.
