A peace protest due to take place in Brighton over the weekend was called off.

About 150 people had been expected to attend a sit-down demonstration in the city centre on Saturday night but it was cancelled for "organisational reasons".

Sussex Action For Peace sent two coaches to a mass demonstration in London on Saturday but numbers were well down on a similar protest last month.

Police have revealed 14 people were arrested after trouble flared at Friday night's demonstration in Brighton and Hove.

Officers in riot gear were pelted with bottles, eggs and flour by activists outside McDonalds in Western Road.

Demonstrator Benjamin Coleman, 25, said officers had been heavy-handed.

A schoolgirl was left in agony when a car ran over her foot during an anti-war protest.

Megan Gaventa, 17, a pupil at Varndean College, Brighton, was taken to hospital after a Mercedes Benz rolled over her foot twice at the Old Steine in Brighton on Thursday at about 1.30pm.

She suffered severe bruising and swelling and is now using crutches.

Police are investigating whether the motorist injured her deliberately.

A 24-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of 11 offences of criminal damage after buildings were daubed with anti-war slogans early yesterday.

Buildings in Dyke Road and near the Clock Tower were daubed with paint.

Superintendent Peter Coll, of Brighton and Hove police, said: "Damage to property will not be tolerated and we will take a firm line on offenders."

Activists also wrote "No war!", "Free Palestine" and "No racist war" in white paint over the front walls of the TA building in High Street, Worthing.

The building is home to 6 Platoon B (Royal Sussex) Company, The Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment.
