Police reinforcements have been called in to prevent trouble at tomorrow evening's Albion v Crystal Palace match in Brighton.

The announcement came as police revealed a man had been charged in connection with violence after the Albion v Portsmouth game in January.

The Railway Bell in Surrey Street was trashed in the incident when chairs and glasses were hurled at police.

The man charged is from Brighton.

Superintendent Peter Coll, second-in-command of Brighton and Hove police, said: "At the time, I launched an investigation and promised those responsible should not feel confident that they would not be prosecuted.

"Following an extensive investigation a man has been arrested and charged with violent disorder.

"Further arrests will follow in the next week."

All leave for city officers has been cancelled for the clash with the Seagulls' arch rivals from South London.

Mr Coll said: "I feel it is timely in the light of the game to reinforce the message that anyone intent on violence in the city centre on match days will be arrested.

"We will be relentless in pursuing those involved.

"I fully support the stance taken by Albion in condemning and banning anyone directly or indirectly involved in violence on match days.

"By concentrating on locking up these one or two individuals we can enable the city to enjoy trouble-free football and entertainment."
