FIREFIGHTERS praised a man for his textbook reaction when he discovered a fire in his Hastings flat.

He ran upstairs after hearing smoke alarms and found the lounge on fire.

He shut the door to contain the blaze, woke his partner and retreated outside the flat in Mount Pleasant Road.

Up to 12 firefighters from Bohemia and The Ridge stations attended the blaze at midnight.

The two-storey terraced property sustained heavy smoke damage. However, fire chiefs today praised the man's actions.

A spokesman said: "He couldn't have acted better. He followed what we would recommend to the book and he deserves praise for that."
