Hastings has been awarded £1.3 million to tackle crime and improve poor health, housing and education.

The money was announced by the government to stem the spiral of decline in the resort.

Hastings has been ranked in the top 30 of the UK's deprivation index and has the 11th worst violent crime rate in the country, according to the Home Office.

Now it has been given £1.3 million of Neighbourhood Renewal Fund (NRF) cash.

It will be spent on appointing tutors to improve school attendance, boost numeracy and literacy among adults and develop computer access.

Brighton and Hove was also among the 88 most deprived areas in England to share £400 million from the NRF.

It was awarded more than £1.3 million to improve community facilities on the Kingswood-Milner estate.
