Skipper Carlo Missirian believes his Brighton and Hove side will do the city proud in South Premier division two next season.

Brighton were confirmed as Kent/Sussex Regional League champions after beating Worthing 1-0 on Saturday.

Promotion is the culmination of three years' hard work after being pipped to the post for the last two seasons.

Next year they will be playing two divisions below National League level for the first time and Missirian insists his men are relishing the prospect.

Missirian said: "Over the last three years we have shown we would be able to compete in the league above. In the cup games against Chichester (three Sussex Cup finals) we have proved we are capable of playing at a higher level.

"We have suffered from a poor league structure that does not promote the best teams. In our league there are two, maybe three, clubs who could survive in the league above. It is just a case of getting in to it."

Missirian believes his team are playing their part in flying the flag for sport in the city and he is hoping their progress can help them find a home of their own.

At present, Brighton and Hove play at the Stanley Deason Leisure Centre but the club would like their own facility.

Missirian said: "Anything that promotes sport in the city has to be welcomed. We have been following the progress of Albion lately and they have been picking up. The Bears are going great guns and Brighton Rugby Club have had a good season.

"We are not a professional outfit but we still feel we have contributed to the name of the city.

"The one thing we want is a proper home. We are trying to find permission and a viable place. We have found one or two places but they have not been viable. Hopefully, with council backing, we will find a place nearer home on the cusp of Brighton and Hove."

Brighton struggled to break down a hard-working Worthing side and had to rely on defender Richard Baker's first goal of the season late in the game to secure victory.

Worthing skipper David Edmondson said: "Brighton have certainly deserved it over the course of this season. However, our performance on Saturday was one that we can take some big positives from."

Missirian added: "We have worked so hard for the last three years. To realise what we set out to do is almost as much relief as elation. It is all down to the commitment of the squad and the management, the training and good coaching."

Brighton went into the game needing a point to ensure second placed Tunbridge Wells could not catch them.

As it turned out, the Kent chasers were held to a 2-2 draw by Horsham which meant they could not have caught the leaders even if Brighton had lost.

Tunbridge Wells were 2-0 up in the first half but Horsham fought back after the interval to stretch their unbeaten run to three games.

Richard Blakesley pulled a goal back and then rightback Simon Jones finished off a tremendous move involving skipper Richard Lowe, Dom Cohen and Blakesley.

Mid Sussex consolidated fifth spot with a 3-2 win at home to Herne Bay.

Steve Newton put Mids ahead from a Luke Hurle pass but they trailed 2-1 at half time.

After the interval Mark Humphreys' shot from a short corner was deflected in off a defender and the winner arrived when Hurle finished from a Phil Middleton pass.
