Surprisingly for a man previously known as a writer of non-fiction, Dave Eggers skitters into the realms of the surreal with remarkable ease.

He opened his reading with a series of letters written from the perspective of a dog called Steven, who likes pizza. Odd.

Eggers' autobiography, A Staggering Work Of Heartbreaking Genius, looks set to be made into a film - Nick Hornby has written the screenplay.

Eggers jokes about Justin Timberlake playing his role, transposing the story of Dave and his three siblings to a musical, set in the 1860's. Surreal.

However, he was in Brighton as part of his whistle-stop, three-day UK tour to promote his new novel, You Shall Know Our Velocity.

In it, two ordinary guys, Will and Hand, take a trip around the world to recover from the death of their friend and to randomly give away $32,000. Weird.

His next project returns to the world of non-fiction, focusing on a group of Sudanese refugees run by Jane Fonda's adopted daughter. Normal, but not.
