Lewes suffered a humiliating 9-1 defeat away to Nottingham which leaves them deep in relegation trouble in National League division two.

The only consolation for Lewes was that the two teams below them, Peterborough Town and Blueharts, both lost twice over the weekend.

Defeat for Lewes left them two points above Peterborough, who currently occupy the play-off place, and eight points ahead of Blueharts, who look doomed to automatic relegation.

Lewes now have five games left to get themselves out of trouble, starting with Saturday's Sussex derby at home to East Grinstead. They follow that with a trip to Bath Buccaneers on Sunday, while the remaining three fixtures include home games with both Blueharts and Peterborough.

Carl Wright put Lewes ahead from open play on six minutes at Nottingham but the hosts fought back to lead 2-1 at half time and then dominated a second half where Lewes were aggrieved by a number of umpiring decisions.

Lewes manager Paul Benoy said: "Apart from our goal difference, which was well ahead of Peterborough anyway, we are no worse off than we were before the weekend.

"We had a long discussion after the game about what went wrong and everybody had a say.

'From what was said, I think it will produce the determination to bounce back."
