Sovereign Harbour residents are to finally get a GPs' surgery in their community following a hard-fought battle with the authorities.

Hundreds of people had complained about travelling miles across Eastbourne to see a GP because of a shortage in their area.

But now council bosses have granted temporary approval for a four-bedroom house in Sovereign Harbour to be used as a surgery.

The house, in a cul-de-sac in Barrier Reef Way, will have a minor operations room, offices, a reception area and a waiting room.

Objections were received by planning officers at Lib Dem-run Eastbourne Borough Council, including noise in a quiet area.

However, residents insisted Sovereign Harbour - one of Eastbourne's most exclusive brownfield sites - cannot wait for a GPs' surgery any longer.

In December a petition with almost 900 names was raised to get a derelict surgery in Kingsmere brought back into use.

A mini demonstration attended by about 30 people was held in an effort to sway the opinion of health bosses and landowners.

Last August, the Government awarded £100,000 to improve GP services in the Eastbourne area.

Nigerian-born Dr Idango Adoki, who will run the surgery, hopes to secure some of the cash to set up his new practice.

It is expected to continue to run until a permanent health centre is built using money announced by health minister John Hutton in August.
