Parking problems have reached new heights of absurdity in the Brighton suburb of Saltdean.

Traffic wardens parked illegally on one side of Longridge Avenue to issue tickets to motorists doing the same thing on the other side.

Longridge Avenue is the border between Brighton and Hove and the rest of East Sussex, where different rules apply.

The west side is patrolled by city parking attendants while the east side is covered by wardens from Sussex Police.

It's wrong that attendants should break the law themselves to issue tickets to other motorists. They, of all people, should ensure they park correctly when carrying out their unpopular task.

But it also highlights another issue which is that the border between the city and East Sussex is in the wrong place.

It's plainly daft to have an invisible line down a shopping street so there are different rules on either side of it.

How much better it would be to draw the line on the other side of East Saltdean, making Telscombe Tye the natural dividing point between the two.

Then the whole of Saltdean would come within Brighton and Hove instead of only the western half.

The disadvantage for drivers would be they would face the tougher parking regime in the city but at least they would know where they were.

Meanwhile, the parking attendants should make sure in future they obey their own rules - and not just in Saltdean.
