Former Crawley boss Billy Smith is in the running to take over at FA Cup giantkillers Farnborough.

The club have called a press conference for later today when they will unveil their successor to Graham Westley who left yesterday to take over at fellow Conference outfit Stevenage, three days after he led Farnborough against Arsenal in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

And Smith, who resigned after three-and-a-half years at Broadfield Stadium a fortnight ago, could be poised to realise his ambition of leading a side in the Conference.

Smith was not available for comment today but Crawley chief executive Steve Duly believes his former manager will do a good job at Cherrywood Road.

Duly said: "I haven't spoken to Billy since he resigned, he decided to lay low for a bit.

"But it has always been his ambition to manage in the Conference and this could be a great opportunity for him.

"He did well in his time here because when he took over the club were at the lowest point in their history. He laid the foundations and built on theml.

"I'm sure he will do a good job if he goes in there. They obviously have a lot going for them at the moment."

Westley, who was criticised for switching Farnborough's tie to Highbury after they were originally drawn at home, is widely tipped to take several of their FA Cup heroes with him.
