Thousands of fish were temporarily stunned by a surge of electricity so they could be moved to cleaner ponds.

Workers from the Environment Agency's fishing team sent a 415-volt charge through the boating lake at Alexandra Park, Hastings.

The electricity temporarily stunned the fish, including perch, bream, eels and carp, bringing them to the surface so they could be moved.

They had been moved to the boating lake last year while other park ponds were dug out to remove silt, which had built up over 180 years.

The ponds had become so blocked plant and animal life was being affected by the lack of oxygen and many fish were stunted.

A council spokesman said: "Rangers were delighted to see the fish had all grown in size.

"As soon as the fish were taken out of the boating lake they were put into water and driven straight up to the ponds, which are now deeper and oxygenated and a much better environment for them."
