Campaigners in Worthing who successfully fought to keep their post office 15 years ago are ready to do battle again.

Broadwater post office in Broadwater Street East could close in April under a nationwide cull planned by the Post Office.

The company says it is considering the move to safeguard the future of other offices in the area, including the Broadwater Green branch.

Broadwater councillor Brian McLuskie, who fought to keep the Broadwater branch open 15 years ago, said: "This is very serious news, particularly for elderly people who rely on it. It is always the vulnerable who get hit by the closures."

The Post Office announced last year it was looking at restructuring and modernising its national network of more than 9,000 urban branches.

Drew McBride, head of the area, said: "Having met the sub-postmaster from Broadwater branch and also other local sub-postmasters, we have concluded if Broadwater post office branch were to shut, it would improve the long-term prospects of the other branches in the area."
