St Leonards dropped into the relegation zone after a 2-0 defeat at fellow strugglers Newport (Isle of Wight) in the Dr Martens eastern division.

Two second-half strikes were enough to extend Saints' run of league defeats to eight games leaving them second from bottom.

Gareth Keeping broke the deadlock after 68 minutes when he blasted into an empty net after young visiting keeper Peter Newstead fumbled a cross from Ashley Wright.

The Islanders sealed the win in stoppage time when Wright broke clear of the Saints defence and neatly finished under Newstead.

It could have been worse for the visitors when Sean Ray handled in his own box, however, Jamie O'Rourke blasted the 60th-minute penalty over the bar.

Saints caretaker manager Terry White said: "I thought we edged it in the second half and when they missed the penalty I thought our luck had changed.

"But then they scored a fortunate goal and that was it."

Saints welcomed back Ray Godden, who came through despite a lack of match fitness.
