A pregnant 12-year-old girl says she decided against an abortion after seeing her baby's image during a scan.

Amy Crowhurst, who is expecting a baby boy next spring, said: "I went to the hospital and we did a mini scan and a normal scan. I saw the baby on the screen and thought 'No, it's too far gone', so me and my mum decided to keep it."

Amy, of Bewbush, Crawley, fell pregnant five and a half months ago after a brief encounter with a 15-year-old boy at a youth club. She says they had sex only once.

She told ITV1's Tonight With Trevor McDonald, screened tonight: "We both wanted to do it, so we did it."

Her 21-year-old sister Kathleen, one of Amy's eight brothers and sisters, said: "I think sometimes Amy doesn't realise she's pregnant because she still wants to get up to little things.

"She still likes mucking around with CDs at home. She goes down to the shops for sweets, out to town with friends when she should be resting. She gets over-tired because she still wants to do what a normal 12-year-old child does."

Amy revealed how she found out she was pregnant.

"We were in town one day and I hadn't eaten or drunk anything, so when I collapsed in the post office and I hadn't had a period for a few months, my mum put two and two together. We went to the chemist and bought one of the home pregnancy tests and found out."

The baby will be brought up alongside Amy's five-month-old brother, Momodou.

Amy, a pupil at Thomas Bennett Community College, Tilgate, Crawley, said: "I look after my brother sometimes, so my mother will be helping me with mine and I'll be helping her with hers."

Her mother Rosemary, 42, admits she was angry at first.

She added: "Half of Amy's childhood has just gone. So where she would have been going out to local discos at 16 she's now got to think of her baby.

"But all I can do is be there for Amy."
