It was a typically mellow but triumphant return for Russ Dewbury's Jazz Bop.

The Event II seemed a strange venue but it actually filled out well with the usual eclectic crowd.

In terms of comfort, it was an improvement on the Corn Exchange, where I last went to a Jazz Bop (and nearly ended up as a puddle as a result of the unbearable heat).

There were a few beatnik types, there to appreciate the jazz but mostly it was a mix of students and 40-somethings.

The music was a laid-back mix of funk and acid-jazz beats, starting at a chilled-out pace and picking up throughout the evening.

A definite highlight was Swedish band Koop, whose singer managed to sound like a cross between Billie Holiday and Roisin from Moloko.
