Albion boss Steve Coppell has attacked a proposal by Fifa which could limit his options in the transfer market.

The world governing body want to restrict English Football League clubs to buying or selling only two players, including loans, in periods between transfer windows.

Coppell said: "I just cannot see the benefits of that. It wouldn't help anybody. It won't aid competition or the clubs.

"What about freedom of movement of labour? This is the lifeblood of clubs lower down. They should leave the transfer window to the Premiership."

Premiership clubs are now only allowed to sign players in January and between the end of the season and the end of August.

The Football League have resisted the same system operating for their clubs, so Fifa's Player Status Committee has come up with the two-player proposal as a compromise.

It will be voted on by the Executive Committee on December 17, but the League are prepared to mount a legal challenge if the scheme is ratified.

League spokesman John Nagle told us: "Our proposals wanted a lot more than they are offering, anything up to ten transfers in each closed period.

"Nobody has yet given us a decent reason for introducing a transfer window system and two in-between each period would not be acceptable to our clubs.

"We will continue to lobby Fifa in order to increase it. If we find there is an attempt to impose the system we would have to consider all our options."

Meanwhile, Steve Melton's one-month loan move to Peter Taylor's Hull could become permanent. "That is a possibility," Coppell revealed.

Former Albion boss Taylor, keen to keep Melton for the Third Division Tigers, said: "He impressed me when I was at Brighton.

"He's a skilful midfield player who can score goals. What he needs is regular first team football."

Shaun Wilkinson featured in a 1-1 draw for Chesterfield's reserves against Wrexham at Saltergate yesterday. The match was a trial for the Seagulls' youngster with a view to joining the Spireites on a month's loan.
