Residents have won a reprieve over plans to build a four-bedroom house in a road they say is over-developed already.

Planners unanimously agreed to a site visit after hearing from residents of Kirdford Road, Arundel, that the development would create safety problems in the road.

One resident told councillors on Arun District Council's development control committee that the road was one of the most densely populated in Arundel.

She feared emergency services would not be able to access the road and adding another house would exacerbate traffic problems.

Arundel Town Council and The Arundel Society also objected to the plans and the council received 35 letters of objection.

Adrian Adams, who put forward the plans, told councillors he had invited residents to tell him their views about what he wanted to do but no one had come to see him.

He planned to live in the new house as he and his family had outgrown their house in the road.

Arundel district councillor Bill Redman told the meeting he felt there was already a "manoeuvrability problem" for cars.

He said: "There is a general feeling of overdevelopment in the road."

Councillors were told that although county highway officials had said the development would mean parking would be lost in an area which already experienced parking problems, the officials said they did not object to the plans.

Planners will make their decision after the site visit during the next few weeks.
