It is good news for glow-worms that one of their few remaining colonies in East Sussex is to be saved.

The colony at Benfield Hill in Portslade has already been badly affected by the building of the Brighton bypass and the moving of a golf clubhouse.

Putting a pipeline though the colony's home could have been the end of them but Southern Water has agreed to reroute it to the south.

Southern Water deserves congratulations for being sensitive about nature conservation when it did not have to bother.

So do the Sussex Downs Conservation Board and local interest groups who discussed their plight with the company.

The glow-worms are a magical sight for many people on long summer evenings and now they will continue to cause delight.
