Brighton and Hove city councillors want to see expansion at Gatwick Airport to secure hundreds of local jobs.
The future of airport development in the South East will be discussed by Brighton and Hove's policy committee next Wednesday.
A formal response will be sent by the city council to the Government's South East regional air services study which looks at how much extra airport capacity will be required over the next 30 years.
Council leader Ken Bodfish said: "It is essential that airports continue to meet the needs of the local economy.
"Gatwick brings huge benefits to the city, both in terms of business, tourism and employment.
"We welcome this study as it sets out a plan which will help guarantee our long-term economic growth."
The study considers options for expanding Gatwick without creating a second runway.
Brighton and Hove's proximity to the airport brings the city improved business links with Europe and more jobs.
The council is also looking at how Shoreham Airport can best be developed for the benefit of the region.
