The next step in the evolution of gaming is here.

Unreal Tournament 2003 is a straight sequel to 1999's original. Released at the same time as Quake III: Team Arena, the two redefined the deathmatch and put internet gaming on the map.

UT 2003 features an all new graphics engine and is the most eye-poppingly beautiful, high-octane game on the PC.

While it's still very much about dispensing indiscriminate death, you can't help but get sucked into the prettiest mayhem yet.

Although UT 2003 is focused on multi-player games, you can practise your moves in single player and instant action modes.

All the classic multiplayer games are here - deathmatch, team deathmatch and capture the flag as well as some new and interesting ones.

Double domination gives two teams a spot each on the map.

If one team can dominate both spots for ten seconds they win the round - do that enough and you've won the match.

Bombing run is a crazy blend of catch and bazooka tennis.

Two teams try to get the ball through the opposing goal. The ball can be fired or passed by the players but while you have the ball you can't shoot but your health regenerates, which will spark tactics like throwing the ball at the attacking player and blasting him while he's helpless.

The maps are amazing and have to be seen to be believed. I've lost many a life online because I've been sidetracked by the gorgeous views.

The ordinance is great but there are no real surprises. With the Grim Reaper playing such a prominent part, the death animations are excellent.

The game looks set to stick around for a long time. The inclusion of the two new tacticheavy game modes as well as some nice in game touches will give the clans and hardcore gamers something to get their teeth into.

The excellent and easy-to-use level editor will mean mods, new maps and add-ons will just keep coming.

This is the best reason yet to splash out on broadband and upgrade to a Geforce4 graphics card.
