Benedict Brook of Charles Street, Brighton, says the West Pier would not be in competition with the Palace Pier because it would be "upmarket shops and restaurants" (Letters, October 24).

I wonder if these will be similar to the "upmarket restaurants" we were assured would be on the Aquarium Terraces?

Toby of Brunswick Place, Hove (Letters, same issue), suggests a new team should be gathered from all involved organisations. I can assure him that Save Our Seafront would be delighted with just such a body. We wrote to the West Pier Trust in 2001 asking it to meet us and have not yet had a reply.

We asked St Modwen to meet us before submitting its second application - again, the developer would not.

We assume this is because its new plans are for buildings that are higher than before and involve development on the beach.

And this is the plan that has been put forward in the media as answering the objections to the first application.

Contrary to the rumours, Save Our Seafront would love to see the West Pier restored. However, we also believe our seafront deserves protection too.
