Brighton insist it is too early to talk about a promotion bid despite their convincing derby win at home to old rivals Lewes.

The Waterhall outfit were 34-5 victors in London Three South East and leapfrogged Eastbourne into second spot after the previous leaders went down at Dartfordians.

Next Saturday's fixtures send Brighton to Eastbourne for what should be a tremendous clash.

Brighton skipper Mark Jenkins enjoyed his side's latest win but admitted: "No league is won or lost in October. I'm encouraged but we have not played any of the top sides yet."

Danie Venter and Harry Hawadi scored two tries apiece with Simon Peters also going over. Mark Gibb kicked three conversions and a penalty against his former club.

Brighton flanker Anthony Pearse broke a hand but played on with the injury taped up.

Lewes were weakened by injury and admitted they were outgunned up front.

Wing Sean Taylor scored a first half try for the visitors, who were pleased by the determination shown by their youngsters.

Eastbourne will be keen to bounce back in the derby after their 28-7 defeat at Dartfordians. The Kent side led 23-0 at the end of a wind-assisted first half and Eastbourne lacked a cutting edge after the break. Dave Webbon scored their try which Ollie Cummings goaled.
