Don Weller is many people's favourite straight ahead tenor sax player.

He is an awesome technician who imbues his solos with effortless swing, in the manner of Sonny Rollins.

Weller has also developed a impressive big band of star soloists to play his own charts. Tonight, the audience at Brighton Jazz Club will experience the smaller but equally well-formed quartet, featuring Dave Newton on piano, Dave Barry on drums and Simon Thorpe on bass.

Vocalist Kate Simmonds and pianist Mark Edwards are at the Clarendon Centre, New England Street, Brighton, tomorrow with the launch of Simmonds' second solo CD, Heart And Soul.

After rapturous receptions on their current tour, the eight-piece group are brimming with the feelgood gospel vibe that made their earlier band the Fabulous Sister Brothers such a strong live experience.

Another fantastic vocal performance is on offer at Lewes Jazz Club on Thursday, when the Liane Carroll Trio performs.

Carroll's extrovert take on jazz, soul and pop standards is guaranteed to blow away the blues.

Roger Carey should be on hand with some wicked slapping technique, and mighty fine bass playing too.

On Thursday, at the Prince Albert, Trafalgar Street, Brighton, the resident trio with Mark Edwards have special guest Mike Williams on alto sax.
