Eastbourne town centre is to be given a £1 million facelift including a new one-way system and more pedestrianised areas.

The bronze war memorial at the junction of Cavendish Place and Grand Parade would be moved in a series of road improvements designed to make life easier for shoppers and traders.

The scheme could mean one-way traffic flow through sections of Seaside Road and Terminus Road.

Pedestrian crossings, paved pedestrian areas, new street lights and plants to brighten up parts of the run-down centre are also on the cards.

A night taxi rank and waiting space for coaches have been earmarked for the pier, which has attracted complaints from coach drivers forced to park out of town.

Civic leaders hope the new look will prove a shot in the arm for businesses in the area which has had a declining reputation.

Liberal Democrat Jon Harris, spokesman for environment and transport on Eastbourne Borough Council, said: "This is a genuinely exciting proposal and we are keen to hear the views of local people."

All the plans will be given an airing in public. Consultation will run until November 4.

A public surgery will be held on Thursday October 25 at TJ Hughes between 6pm and 8pm.

Business owners and residents can also comment on the scheme by filling in forms available at the council office in Grove Road.
