Four homes in Bognor were evacuated last night because of a gas leak, which started while contractors were replacing steel pipes with plastic ones.
Transco was called to deal with the pipe, providing gas to several streets in the Bersted area.
A fire engine was on stand-by and police closed off roads including Chalcraft Lane.
A temporary repair was made and people were allowed back into their homes and roads were reopened by 10pm.
