As a Second World War veteran, I am saddened - indeed, disgusted - by the lack of respect shown to a local war memorial (The Argus, September 11).

British war memorials and war cemeteries in many parts of the world are carefully tended and respected yet a memorial in the midst of our own city, in the Old Steine in Brighton, is marred by litter and its signs covered in graffiti.

It is disappointing that for five years, despite council officers' promises to provide further protection, nothing has been done about it. Why?
