Chris Adams was ruled out of Sussex's final Championship match today after suffering a recurrence of the knee injury which has plagued him for much of the season.
Adams has missed six games this summer after having an operation at the end of May and coach Peter Moores believes only extended rest will cure the problem.
Richard Montgomerie led the county against a Warwickshire side needing a victory to secure runners-up spot behind Surrey.
There were two other changes for Sussex. Carl Hopkinson made his first-class debut while Paul Hutchison made only his third Championship appearance of the season in the absence of James Kirtley.
Sussex won the toss and Montgomerie and Goodwin made a solid start with Montgomerie, who needs 51 runs to reach 1,000 for the season clipping Neil Carter for successive boundaries through the on side in the second over as Sussex reached 9-0.
Marcus Trescothick powered his way to a quickfire half-century as England made a flying start in their ICC Champions Trophy match against Zimbabwe at the Premadasa Stadium.
Trescothick treated the opposing new-ball attack with contempt at times on his way to an unbeaten 53 out of a 15-over total of 92 -1 after Nasser Hussain had won the toss and chosen to bat first.
He lost his opening partner Nick Knight for seven.
