Dog owners Peter and Sheila Rough face a big vet's bill after one of their Jack Russell terriers was attacked.
They were walking their pets at Roedean Bottom in east Brighton when Spot was attacked by a German Shepherd.
Even for a tenacious Jack Russell, that was an uneven battle and Spot needed several stitches.
What angered them was not only the savage attack but also the attitude of the German Shepherd's owner.
He did not offer any apology or show a scintilla of concern for their badly-injured pet.
It all goes to show that while Britain is often portrayed as a nation of animal lovers, there is a substantial minority of pet owners who show scant concern for their welfare.
This owner badly needs both to get his dog under strict control and to learn some basic manners.
