There have been many theories about how the dinosaurs were wiped out.

Some scientists believe a giant meteor did the deed while others reckon it took a catastrophic virus to rid the world of the scaly giants.

An alternative answer, it would seem, is that an American Indian was transported through time and embarked upon a bloody mission to kick dino butt.

That's according to the continuing Turok saga, of which Turok Evolution for the PlayStation 2 is the latest instalment.

In this first-person shooter, you play Tal'Set, a battle-hardened warrior magically transported to the Lost Lands in his dying moments.

Tal'Set learns the death of his people was ordained so he might embrace a higher purpose and become Turok, the Son of Stone, protector and saviour.

He becomes a reluctant participant in the brutal war raging in the Lost Land.

Motivated by his feelings of isolation, he agrees to help the people of the Lost Land battle for their lives against the Evil Lord Tyrannus, leader of the reptilian hordes.

A brutal war ensues between the forces of good and evil.

Critically lauded and a huge unit shifter, the Turok series can seemingly do no wrong.

The mixture of violent action and challenging gameplay has wowed gamers around the world. But this latest instalment will interest few but the most ardent fans.

The graphics are well realised, if a little blocky, and the artificial intelligence is pretty good. But, compared to the Doom series and Medal Of Honour games, Turok Evolution seems a little too dated.

There is enough variety in the gameplay, however, including some cool Pteranodon flying sequences and lots of different weapons to attack your scaly nemesis.

It makes for diverting, if not totally satisfying, combat.

Price: £39.99.
