The recent reports about the efforts of Brighton seafront trader John Stephenson to obtain a fair settlement from BT (The Argus, September 13, August 2, May 3) are a classic case of a huge, highly profitable company belittling and undermining a decent local businessman.
Companies such as BT have a social responsibility to act in a fair and decent way to their employees, customers and non-customers alike.
It is clear from the reports Mr Stephenson has a genuine complaint with BT and feels its shoddy repairs to the road above his shop have resulted in losses to his small business of up to £60,000.
It is a shame he cannot afford to pursue his case because, although confident BT has acted irresponsibly, he cannot afford to lose up to £15,000 on court action in the unlikely event the case should go against him.
Albion Gifts is one of the main Brighton seafront shops and provides a much-needed service to locals and tourists alike.
As customers on several occasions, our family has seen how popular John is with his customers and the other traders.
I would urge BT to renew its negotiations with John and remind the company of its responsibilities. BT's corporate muscle should be used positively to find a fair solution and not to shirk the issue.
