David Courtney and his company want to build a monorail between Brighton Marina and the Palace Pier.

For anyone who has studied Brighton and Hove's transport needs, the immediate question that springs to mind is why?

Clearly the marina could be better served by public transport but I venture to suggest only a few passengers would want to travel only as far as the Palace Pier.

Most travellers would wish to go to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton Station, Western Road and points further west.

In the other direction, some people would like to travel to Newhaven.

What is needed is a rapid transit rail system from Newhaven linking these and other destinations.

A monorail suffers from the fundamental problem that it cannot have points and would require an expensive and unsightly elevated concrete "rail" upon which to run.

The "anti" brigade would be out in force and it is highly unlikely that planning permission would be given for such a structure on the beach.

This venture is doomed to failure and likely to be consigned to the list of other Brighton white elephants such as Magnus Volk's Daddy Longlegs.
