Police hunting a sex attacker suspected of four assaults on women at Butlins in Bognor were today questioning a 28-year-old man.

The suspect was arrested in Troon, Scotland, on Wednesday and brought to Sussex yesterday.

Sussex Police refused to identify the man but said their search for a Romanian illegal immigrant called Petru Samfira, who was strongly linked to the attacks, had been halted.

One woman said she was raped and three others reported they were indecently assaulted in or near the holiday resort. All the women were in their early 20s.

A source close to the inquiry said the man, who was today being questioned at Chichester police station, was Samfira who had been working for a sub-contractor at the Rolls-Royce factory, Goodwood.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: "The man in custody cannot be identified but we wish to stress that our appeal to find a named person has been withdrawn.

"The man may be held for some time and an identity parade may be held. If he is not charged, he may be released on bail, at which point he could be deported from the country."

Last week, police released an electronic photo-fit of Samfira, believed to be the same man caught on CCTV riding away from Butlins at midnight on Wednesday last week.

One of the sex attack victims was a guest at the camp. The other three were all local women, two of whom had connections with the camp. It not thought any of the victims knew each other.
