On October 6, the aquarium in Brighton will be the finishing point for the 52nd edition of the world-famous, ultra-distance road running race, the London to Brighton.
The race boasts a most prestigious starter, the field traditionally being sent on its way by Big Ben's first ding at 7am. Next stop Brighton.
The course has been of various lengths over the years, now veering off the old route at Coulsdon, but the best performance is attributed to 1974 Commonwealth marathon gold medallist, Ian Thompson.
In 1980, after an epic battle with American Alan Kirik over 54 miles 460 yards, Ian was victorious in five hours, 15mins, 15secs, an incredible average speed of about five minutes 49sec a mile.
I dare say a few battle-worn commuters can relate horror stories of when the train has taken longer.
