Lewes MP Norman Baker has slammed radio soap opera The Archers for its coverage of the pro-hunting campaign.

The Liberal Democrat MP criticised the drama, which has been running for more 50 years, for "missing the target".

He also says the Radio 4 show supports the Countryside Alliance and next month's pro-hunt march.

Mr Baker said he was compelled to complain after he heard characters talk about the pro-hunt campaign and felt this was unfair.

He said: "They keep on mentioning the countryside march. Anyone would think they are sponsored by them.

"The majority of people are against hunting but you would never think it from listening to the programme. They need to change the programme so it has the views of both sides.

"Although it's only a fictional programme, it is still very important. The Archers prides itself on dealing with topical issues but, in this case, they are doing it all wrong.

"Excuse the pun but they have missed the target. People in villages, like in my constituency, are slightly more in favour of hunting than those in towns, but there are still a large number who want hunting banned.

"I am judging this on my post, which receives plenty of letters each day that are anti-hunting. I think the programme should have a contrary view."
